Common Questions About Text Neck

First published September 19, 2019, refreshed August 2026

Text neck is neck pain and stiffness caused by looking down at a phone or tablet for long stretches, and it is one of the most common complaints Stewart Clinic of Chiropractic sees in Casa Grande. Here are the questions patients ask most.

How does text neck happen?

When you look down at a phone, your head tilts forward and your shoulders slump. Your head is heavy, and the further it tilts, the harder your neck muscles work to hold it up. Researchers have estimated that a deep forward tilt can load the neck with several times the head's normal weight. Hold that position for hours a day and the muscles, joints, and discs in your neck start to complain.

What are the common symptoms?

A stiff neck that is hard to turn. Neck pain that gets worse with movement. Pain that spreads into the shoulders or arms. Weakness in the shoulders. Tension headaches that start at the base of the skull.

How is text neck treated?

Pain medicine and muscle relaxers can dull the symptoms, but they do not fix the posture and joint restriction underneath. At Stewart Clinic of Chiropractic, care usually layers gentle adjusting to restore motion in the neck, soft tissue work for the tight muscles, and simple exercises that retrain your posture so the pain does not keep coming back.

How can I prevent it?

Bring the phone up closer to eye level instead of dropping your head. Take real breaks, your neck and your eyes both need them. Use two hands for a big phone. Small habits, practiced daily, take a surprising amount of load off your neck.

If your neck has been stiff, achy, or sending headaches your way, an evaluation leaves you knowing what is actually going on.
